States with Best Doctors Ranked, Ohio Fares Poorly

|

WalletHub, a popular website concerned with personal finances and where consumers can find the best value for their dollar, recently studied the doctors and hospital practices in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. They ranked them from most competent and safe to the “worst” with the most incidents of medical malpractice. Ohio State fell below average and earned a rank of 31.

The website’s study relied on 11 metrics to rank the states, including:

  • Average salaries for physicians
  • Number of physicians per 1,000 residents
  • Number of medical malpractice incidents
  • Average payout for medical malpractice cases

Out of all the physicians, doctors, and medical practitioners in Ohio, about 5.5% of them have been faced with serious discipline after causing a medical malpractice concern or event. This is the third-highest rate of incident per every 1,000 physicians, according to the study.

An Imbalanced Board in Ohio

Despite this drastically high amount of disciplinary concerns in the state, Ohio doctors were among some of the highest-paid in the country. Most surgeons in Ohio, for example, earned over $250,000 a year, after it was adjusted for the average cost of living. Even in starting and entry positions, medical practitioners in the state were earning close to $4,000 a month.

Medical malpractice lawsuits were also concluded with a comparatively low average payout to plaintiffs in Ohio. With all of the cases counted and calculated, each plaintiff was paid $5.77. This staggeringly low number is due to the fact that the vast majority of medical malpractice complaints in Ohio ended with plaintiffs receiving nothing at all. Medical malpractice cases can be notoriously difficult for plaintiffs to win if they are not prepared for litigation, sometimes based solely on the fact that the hospital or medical group that caused them harm has more resources to craft their defense.
